Everybody has this. Stuff that was really good or interesting a while ago and then it ends up in some bin, drawer or the farthest corner of the room where all the now useless crap is piling up. I myself have a full box of old Apple electronics that are either too old or too worn out to be resold, but throwing them out does not seem like a good option… because in a couple of years this stuff might be interesting to show to my grandchildren someday. But other than that, this collection of electronic memories is: Worthless!
I came to the conclusion that I should manifest this idea in a humorous memorial in the form of a neon light art piece.
The vector graphics for the sign were made, and two to three weeks later the custom-made neon letters were delivered from overseas. I wanted real glass neon letters to give it the vintage look I was aiming for. I ordered Plexiglas sheets already cut to the exact dimensions and built a showcase around the letters and the wooden backplate I painted purple (a colour homage to early 2000s iPod print ads). The centerpiece is an iPhone 4s “unwrapped” showing all the accessories and typical, high-quality Apple design & haptics, contrasting the “worthless” signage with a twice-bitten Apple logo 😉 highlighting the sad truth about once expensive and now forgotten objects.
